Shaktikanta Das became the new Governor of Reserve bank of India
Former financial secretary and current member of the finance commission, Shakhantant Das has been appointed as, a 25th governor of RBI. News Agency Reuters has reported this. Das’s tenure will be for three years.
Das also played an important role in demonetization Das was among those who drafted this decision taken by the government.
About Shaktikanta Das:
Shastikanta Das is the IAS officer of the 1980 batch Tamil Nadu cadre. Das is a professor in history from Delhi University. During his 37-year long tenure, he remained stationed mostly in the financial and finance departments of the Center and the state.
Shaktikanta Das was appointed the joint secretary for the first time in the finance ministry in 2008 when P. Chidambaram was the finance minister. After this, when Pranab Mukherjee took over the finance minister in the UPA government, he remained in the ministry and remained a part of the team for the first time as the joint secretary and as additional secretary for five years in the budget. This period was in both the times of Chidambaram and Mukherjee.
Das was also a secretary of economic affairs between 2015 and 2017 and has worked closely with the central bank. At present, he is a member of the finance commission. Apart from this, he is the official representative of India in the G-20 conference.
Why Urjit Patel left the job a day ago?
After differences with the central government on several issues including the autonomy of the Reserve Bank, the Reserve Bank’s 24th Governor Urjit Patel, suddenly surprised everyone by resigning on Monday evening. However, he cited personal reasons behind it.
Urjit Patel was appointed as the 24th Governor of RBI in September 2016. He was appointed for three years after the end of Raghuram Rajan’s tenure.
