1. Parliament passed the National Council of Teacher Education (Amendment) Bill, 2018
After the approval of the Rajya Sabha on January 3, 2019, the Indian Parliament passed the National Teacher Education Council (Amendment) Bill, 2018. Lok Sabha had already passed the Bill. The Bill seeks to amend the National Council for Teacher Education (NCTE) Act, 1993.
2. Great filmmaker Mrinal Sen passed away at the age of 95.
Great filmmaker Mrinal Sen passed away on December 30, 2018, in Kolkata, West Bengal. His death ended the legends of the golden era of parallel cinema, who crossed the boundaries in bringing Indian cinema to the global stage. Padma Bhushan and Dada Saheb Phalke Awardees were known primarily to pave the way for governance.
3. Government launches ‘Clean Survey 2019’.
Union Minister of Housing and Urban Affairs, Hardeep Singh Puri inaugurated the fourth edition ‘Clean Survey 2019’ of the annual nationwide hygiene survey of urban India in New Delhi. The purpose of Clean Survey 2019 is to evaluate the achievements of the cleanliness level in the urban areas of the country. It has been launched as a part of ‘Swachh Bharat Abhiyan’.
This survey will cover 40 million people of more than 4000 cities and cities
4. Indian Panorama Film Festival begins in New Delhi.
The Indian Panorama Film Festival has started at Siri Fort Auditorium, New Delhi. Information and Broadcasting Secretary Amit Kha inaugurated the festival.
A total of 26 feature films and 21 non-feature films will be shown during the festival. The festival is being organized by Directorate of Film Festivals of the Ministry of Information and Broadcasting.
5. Veteran Bollywood actor-writer Kader Khan passes away.
Bollywood actor-director and scholar, Kader Khan passed away on January 1, 2019, following prolonged illness in Toronto, Canada. He was 81.
6. Justice TBN Radhakrishnan took oath as the first Chief Justice of Telangana Hight Court.
Justice Thothathil Bhaskaran Nayar Radhakrishnan took oath as the first Chief Justice of the Telangana High Court on January 1, 2018.
7. ASI declared 6 monuments national importance in 2018.
Ministry of Culture announced that the Archaeological Survey of India (ASI) has declared 6 monuments as protected and national importance in 2018 under the ancient monuments and archeological sites and relics Act, 1958.
These Places are:
- The 125-year-old Old Court Building in Nagpur, Maharashtra.
- A group of temples in Ranipur zari in Bolangir district of Odisha.
- Memorial of 2 Mughal eras in Agra – Aga Khan and Hathi Kahan’s mansion.
- Neemrana Bauri in Alwar district of Rajasthan.
- Vishnu temple in Kothali in Pithoragarh district of Uttarakhand.
8. Bill to make marital rape a crime introduced in Lok Sabha
A private bill titled the Women’s Sexual, Reproductive and Menstrual Rights Bill 2018 has been introduced in the Lok Sabha by Congress MP Dr. Shashi Tharoor. The bill proposes to make marital rape a crime and gives more decisional autonomy to women in termination of pregnancy.
9. Five nations assume charge as Non-Permanent Members of UN Security Council.
Five countries, namely, Belgian, Dominican Republic, Germany, Indonesia, and South Africa took charge as non-permanent members of the United Nations Security Council (UNSC).
These five countries will hold a two-year term in the Council with effect from January 1, 2019. This will be the Dominican Republic’s first time on the Security Council. The other four countries have previously served on the body.
10. Parliament passed the Right to Free and Compulsory Education (Amendment) Bill, 2018, to the Children.
Indian Parliament passed the Free and Compulsory Education for Children (Amendment) Bill, 2018, which attempts to end the no-detention policy in schools. This law is important because it brings accountability to the re-education system.
Under the current provisions of the Act, no student can be detained till the eighth grade. According to the amendment, the states will be left to decide whether to continue the no-detention policy.

The number of complaints registered in the Banking Ombudsman units has seen an increase of 25% in the financial year 2018, most of these complaints are coming from urban centres due to increased awareness and bad intrusion prevention mechanisms of banks.

16. Sachin’s coach Ramakant Achrekar passes away.
Ramakant Achrekar, who has been trained by Bharat Ratna, Sachin Tendulkar and Vinod Kambli, has passed away due to a heart attack.
He was 87 years old and he breathed his last night at Dadar. Padma Shri in 2010 and Dronacharya Award in 1990, were able to shape the career of more than a dozen top cricketers.

18. RBI has released financial stability report.
Reserve Bank of India released eighteen publication of the Financial Stability Report (FSR). FSR shows the overall assessment of the financial stability and the financial system’s flexibility on the financial sustainability and sub-committee of the Development Council (FSDC).
In the domestic financial markets, structural changes in credit intermediate and the interconnected relationship between banks and non-banks calls for greater vigilance.
19. 100% Houses in 25 States were electrified under saubhaagy yojana.
With the completion of electrification in 100% houses in 25 states at the end of the year, the country achieved another feat in the power sector. Now, only 10.48 lakh families have to be electrified in four states – Assam, Rajasthan, Meghalaya and Chhattisgarh.
