Early life of Sardar Patel:

Patel was born in 31 October 1875 in a well self-sufficient family of the Leva Patidar caste. He attended primary school at Karamasad and the high school at Petlad. Patel married at the age of 16, and matriculated at the age of 22, and passed the district pleader’s examination, which enabled him to practice law.

As a lawyer, Patel distinguished himself in presenting an unassailable case in a precise manner and in challenging police witnesses and British judges. Patel went to London in August 1910 to study at the Middle Temple. There he studied diligently. Returning to India in February 1913, he settled in Ahmadabad, there he become the leading barrister in criminal law.

Political Career:

In 1917 Patel found the course of his life changed after having been influenced by Mohandas K. Gandhi (Gandhi Ji). After coming in contact with Mohandas Karamchand Gandhi in 1917, he influenced by him and gathered the farmers of Kheda, Barasad and Bardoli through non-violent and civil disobedience movement against the policies of the British Raj. Seeing the reason for his work, he joined the category of influential leaders of Gujarat. Because of his important role in the movement for public welfare and freedom, he got important position in the Indian National Congress. The people of Bardoli taluka of Gujarat named him ‘Sardar’ and in this way he started calling Sardar Vallabh Bhai Patel

In 1947, India got independence, but despite this, the challenge before the country was to unite its small princely states, which could make the dream of an unbroken and huge India year come true. In this way, Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel clarifying the policy towards the princely states said that princely states will be included in the Indian Union on the basis of three subjects – security, foreign and communication system. Sardar Patel was before independence. Together with P.V.Menon, the work was started to join several indigenous states in India. Patel and Menon explained to the Indian kings that it would not be possible to give them autonomy. As a result, all the remaining Rajvans accepted the proposal for merger in India. Apart from Hyderabad, Kashmir and Junagadh, the remaining princely states of India joined the ‘Union of India’ till August 15, 1947. When there was a lot of opposition against the Nawab of Junagadh, he fled to Pakistan and Junagadh was also found in India. When the Nizam of Hyderabad rejected the proposal for merger in India, Sardar Patel surrendered the Nizam by sending an army there. After becoming the Home Minister, the responsibility of the merger of Indian principals was entrusted to him. He discharged his responsibilities and merged six hundred smallest princely states into India. On December 15, 1950, Sardar Patel went on to say goodbye to this world.
