Guru Nanak Dev ji : Adi guru of sikhs

In India, many saints and sages have been born from time to time. Gurunanak Dev ji is also one of them. Guru Nanak is the first Guru (Adi Guru) of Sikhs. Their followers address them with the names of Guru Nanak, Guru Nanak Dev ji, Baba Nanak and Nanakshah. Guru Nanak had the qualities of philosopher, yogi, householder, reformer, social reformer, poet, patriot and worldly all in his personality.

Family and early life of Guru Nank Ji

There are two opinions about the birth of Guru Nanak, the originator of Sikh religion, some believe that Guru Nanak Dev was born on April 15, 1469. But many people celebrate the birth anniversary of Guru Nanak Dev in 1526 on the day of Kartik Purnima. This day is celebrated as a light festival. Guru Nanak was born in a Khatrakul village in Talwandi, situated on the bank of river Ravi. His father’s name was Kalyan Chand or Mehta Kalu ji and mother’s name was Trupta Devi. Later, the name of Talwandi had to be changed  in the name of Nanak. His sister’s name was Nanaki. At the age of 16, he married the daughter of Sulkkhan, and he became father of two boys Srichand and Lakhmidas. He died in a dharmashaala at Kartarpur (now in Pakistan) in 1539 AD. Before his death, he declared his disciple Bhai Lahna the successor, who later became known as Guru Angad Dev. Guru Angad Dev became the second guru of Sikhism.

2. Second Guru – Guru Angad Dev
3. Third Guru – Guru Amar Das
4. Fourth Guru – Guru Ram Das
5. The fifth Guru – Guru Arjun Dev
6. Sixth Guru – Guru Hargobind
7. Seventh Guru – Guru Har Rai
8. Eighth Guru – Guru Har Kishan
9. Ninth Guru – Guru Teg Bahadur
10. Tenth Guru – Guru Gobind Singh

After the ten gurus, Guru Granth Sahib was considered as the main scripture of Sikh religion. There are 1430 pages in Guru Granth Sahib, which include the teachings of Sikh Gurus as well as 30 Saints.

Principles of Guru Nanak Dev Ji

The principle of Guru Nanak Dev is still relevant to followers of Sikhism, which are as follows:

  • There is one God.
  • Ego is the preventative of spiritual progress
  • All human beings are equal
  • God is present everywhere and in every creature.
  • Serve the Lord by working hard with loyalty.
  • Do not persecute any innocent creature or animal.
  • Always be happy.
  • Honestly and earnestly, some portion of the income should be donated to the needy.
  • All humans are equal, whether they are female or male.
  • Food is essential to keep the body healthy, but avoid greedy and greedy behavior.
