Sitar Player Manju Mehta Gets ‘Tansen Samman’
The famous Sitar player Manju Mehta has been honored with ‘Tansen Samman’ for the year 2018 by the Madhya Pradesh government for his contributions in the field of music. Union Minister Narendra Singh Tomar presented the award to Mehta, 74, at the inauguration ceremony of the Tansen Music Festival.
She was given a cash award of Rs 2 lakh and a memento. Manju Mehta recipient of several honors, she learned music from the great sitar player Late Pandit Ravi Shankar.
About Manju Mehta:
Veteran sitar Manju Mehta belongs to the Bhatt family of Jaipur, in which other prominent musicians Shashimohan Bhatt and Pandit Vishwa Mohan Bhatt come. She has been a top performer in All India Radio and has co-founded the Saptak School of Music in Gujarat. She runs a music school in Ahmedabad, Gujarat.
About Tansen Samaroh and Tansen Award(Samman):
Tansen music is celebrated every year in the month of December in Bhat village of Gwalior district of Madhya Pradesh. This is a 4-day musical festival. Artists and music lovers from around the world gather here to pay tribute to great Indian musical Maestro Tansen. This program is organized by the Academy of Culture and Program, Madhya Pradesh, near Tansen’s Tomb.
The award organized by Madhya Pradesh Government to honor individual artists for important contributions to Hindustani classical music. This award provides a cash prize of Rs 2 lakh and a memento. The first Tansen award was given to sitar maestro Ustad Abdul Halim Jafar Khan in 2000.
